Padres Rumors: Trade Deadline Rumors, July 31st

We’re down to the final hours now. The San Diego Padres and AJ Preller have until 1pm PST to make any trades before the deadline.

We’ve expected soon to be free-agents Ian Kennedy, Joaquin Benoit, and Will Venable to be moved but so far the names in discussion have been Justin Upton and Craig Kimbrel.

Here is the breakdown from this week, we’ll see if any of these rumors come to fruition. Usually gossip doesn’t but sometimes where there is smoke there’s fire: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Here’s the buzz so far, be sure to check back in regularly for updates…

Hold the phone, sounds like the Padres did make a move after all. Getting rid of Abraham Almonte is a smart move no matter what you get in return IMO.

#Padres largely standing pat because GM A.J. Prellerbelieves the team can reach the postseason, source says.

— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 31, 2015Aaaaand we’re done. That’s it. The Padres made ZERO moves. I’m beyond surprised at this point. I guess we just have to trust that Preller did not like what the other teams were offering.

Makes sense, he gave up a ton to get him.

Padres want a top prospect and Yankees don’t want to trade any of theirs. Clock is ticking on one of these to change their tune.

I am both excited and scared…

Sounds like the New York Yankees are making a late push for Kimbrel. If the Yankees would only take on Melvin Upton‘s contract as well, I’d be all for it.

Interesting, now the Boston RedSox have entered the mix. Kimbrel is the current Padre I’d like to trade the least, but he likely would give the Pads the greatest return since he is the best closer in baseball. One RedSox prospect to consider is recently signed Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada, whom the Padres were heavily pursuing this offseason. The Los Angeles Dodgers traded their recently signed big Cuban infield prospect, Hector Olivera. Maybe Boston could do the same.

The big rumor last night was that the Padres and Houston Astros were working on a “Significant Deal”. I’ve said for awhile that I like the prospects that the Astros and Chicago Cubs have, so a trade with them would be my preference. However, the Astros did just trade quite a few prospects to the Colorado Rockies so who knows what they’d be willing to part with now.

Do it.

The Minnesota Twins have not been linked to the Padres until last night, but they do have some young prospects Preller could be interested in.
