Padres News: Padres Launch Volunteer Team

Have you ever wanted to meet your favorite San Diego Padres players or give back to the community? Well now the Padres are giving you a chance to do both. On Friday the team announced Padres Volunteer Team presented by Toyota. According to a press release from the team, the program aims to “call upon Padres fans and San Diego residents to join with our players, alumni and staff to donate their time to San Diego’s non-profit community, civic organizations and Padres Foundation activities.”

To become a part of the Volunteer Team you can visit www.padres.com/volunteer to sign up. Also during home games at Petco Park they’ll be an opportunity to sign up there. As a member of the team, you’ll get a chance to pick and choose different service opportunities that have been vetted by the organization. For every hour someone volunteers they’ll receive a “Hit” which can be redeemed for tickets or “exclusive experiences.”

This is yet another way that the new Padres ownership has impressed. In their short time in charge of the team, they’ve brought in the most exciting GM in baseball, raised payroll, reinvigorated the fan base and landed the 2016 All-Star game, even if that may have taken some measures that some fans were not pleased with.

While there’s likely a PR driven component of this, I fully support any efforts to give back to the community. Hopefully the fans take this opportunity to do some good and while they’re at it, they may get a chance to meet some of their heroes and score some seats to a game or two. I think this is a great project and the Volunteer Team should be a huge hit.
