There are two things that get under Manny Machado's skin. One, is when reporters reference a team as having a "hot" streak. The other is the word "urgency." Granted, these pet peeves of Machado's were not callously spewed into reporters' iPhone voice memos but provoked. In an interview with MartyTimeTV, Machado fielded questions until the word "urgency" was thrust upon him by an unassuming reporter.

The beginning of the interview began cordial with normal postseason banter. Machado, after being praised the entire season for his veteran presence, sounded more like a manager or pitcher when emphasizing the keys to winning in Chicago. Machado stressed their mantra of "27 outs," which should invigorate Friars fans, knowing that their veteran superstar isn't trying to be flashy but instead focused on defense and pitching, the tried and true postseason archetypes, especially on the road. When asked about Wrigley Field, Machado confidently replied, "The postseason is the postseason...it doesn't matter where you play."

Padres' Manny Machado gave reporter some backlash ahead of 2025 MLB playoffs

Machado was then asked about the Friars playing with urgency." The third baseman quickly denounced the idea, "Urgency?...You see, this is why I do not like reporters, the words you guys use..." Ouch. Although that comment may sting a little, we have to admit, this is why we love Manny Machado - no fluff, all baseball. The unnamed reporter quickly doubles down on the future Hall of Famer. "If it's not urgency, what word would you use?" And in a very classic Hip Hop album manner, à la DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince's He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper, Machado responds, "I'm not a [writer]. I'm a baseball player, that's why I picked a good sport to play, so yeah, I have no idea."

All we can really ask of professional baseball players during interviews is honesty. In one crude response, the Padres' Manny Machado shoots past honesty and lands at righteousness. The grind of 162-game season has given way to a golden opportunity for the Friars. Although Machado is not a reporter, he sure knows how to conclude an interview. After creating distance from reporters, he shows them he can relate to them by saying, "You guys write stories everyday...we already forgot about what happened last year, we're writing our new story." And that story begins Tuesday afternoon, no over-complicated words, only baseball, and it's just how Manny Machado prefers.
