The San Diego Padres are going into the 2025 MLB playoffs riding a red-hot resurgence. The Friars ended the season going 7-1 in their final eight contests to lock up a playoff berth, so they don't need much else to ignite them as they begin a Wild Card series against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
However, they were just given even more motivation to go into the postseason with the utmost confidence. Right-handed flamethrower Mason Miller was named the NL Reliever of the Month for September following what was arguably the single-most dominant month by a bullpen arm this year. That should definitely get the clubhouse even more locked in.
Padres' Mason Miller was named September Reliever of the Month in the National League
Miller was traded to the Padres from the A's at the deadline, which in turn led to him being the best trade piece of the MLB season. In 22 overall appearances, Miller donned an 0.77 ERA with a K/9 north of 17. Somehow, his September numbers were even more impressive than this.

In the final month of the regular season, Miller did not allow a run across 12.1 innings (11 appearances), racking up 26 strikeouts... all while scattering just one hit (0.49 WHIP in September). It's blasphemy. It's utter dominance. It's exactly what the Padres needed after losing Jason Adam for the entire season with a leg injury. Adam was the most reliable reliever in the National League until he got hurt, and Miller did more than just fill his shoes. He even had an immaculate inning, joining Andrew Kittredge, Cal Quantrill, and Brandon Young as the four pitchers to attain this feat in 2025.
When Miller came over to the Padres, he had a 3.76 ERA. In two months with San Diego, he lowered it all the way down to 2.63. It will be very hard to come across a stronger month from another pitcher this season, and Miller was rewarded for it. Hopefully this sparks even more of a fire into the clubhouse energy, as they are the lower the seed in the opening series against Chicago. We'll take all of the momentum we can get our hands on.
