One week remains until the MLB Trade Deadline, and the Padres are gearing up for a week of wheeling and dealing to improve their roster as they prepare for the postseason. Rumors are flying, and there are plenty of available players that could add new talent to the Padres' roster. However, not every rumor is one that makes Padres fans hopeful and excited. Here are three trade rumors Padres fans hope come true, and three that they hope never see the light of day.
Hope it comes true: Padres trade for Jarren Duran
The Padres are badly in need of a left fielder, and the Red Sox have a log jam of talent in their own outfield. Could this deal really happen? Duran was an 8.2 bWAR player in 2024, and while he has not come close to replicating that production, he's still on pace for a four-win season. He's also under club control through 2029, making him a long-term controllable asset who could help the Padres for years to come. An outfield of Fernando Tatis Jr, Jackson Merrill, and Jarren Duran would be among the best in baseball.
Hope it falls through: Padres trade Robert Suarez
If the Padres trade Suarez, fans will probably be upset. It's been rumored that the back-to-back All-Star closer could be on the trade block, although it is hard to gauge how likely it is. While the Padres probably do have the bullpen depth to make this type of move, fans will still struggle to see the benefits of trading the closer who leads the league in saves.
Hope it comes true: Padres trade for Marcell Ozuna
ESPN's recent trade deadline prediction piece has San Diego trading to acquire Braves designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. Even in a down year for the veteran slugger, this would help San Diego immensely. Ozuna's 13 home runs would rank fourth on the team, while his .749 OPS would rank third.
Hope it falls through: Padres trade for Luis Robert Jr.
Don't be fooled by his recent hot streak. Luis Robert Jr. is not the player he once was. The outfielder is slashing .206/.293..343, for a very weak 78 OPS+, the worst in his career. The Padres would likely end up overpaying for a below-average outfielder because of his name value. The truth is, Robert Jr. has only had one good season, and the chances he replicates it are lower than the chances he continues to play poorly.
Hope it comes true: Padres trade for Seth Lugo
Trade rumors surrounding Lugo are growing, and with the Royals scuffling below .500 in the AL Central, Lugo is their best trade chip. The Padres converted Lugo into a starter in 2023 and saw him pitch to a 3.57 ERA in 26 starts. This year, he's been even better in 2025, with a 2.95 ERA across 19 starts. Padres fans would love a reunion, especially with the struggles in the back-end of their rotation in 2025.
Hope it falls through: Padres ship out Luis Arraez
Arraez has been a weak hitter in 2025 with a career-low 98 OPS+ and a career-low batting average of .285. He was discussed as a trade chip in the offseason, but the Padres held on to him. While he has not been the batting champ that he was from 2022-2024, he has still been a solid contact hitter, and fans would not appreciate seeing him traded just over a year after he came to San Diego.
