It has been no secret that the San Diego Padres need another outfielder, particularly in left field. They have been connected to several outfielders this season as potential trade fits, including Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox.
However, if Duran is too costly for the Friars, there are apparently three solid options to fill the void in left field. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com lists Luis Robert Jr. (Chicago White Sox), Jesus Sanchez (Miami Marlins), and Taylor Ward (Los Angeles Angels) as potential suitors for San Diego ahead of this year's trade deadline.
Luis Robert Jr., Jesus Sanchez, Taylor Ward could be next left fielder for Padres
One thing is for certain: Luis Robert Jr. needs to get out of Chicago. The 27-year-old is struggling big time in 2025, batting .185 with an OPS under .600. Following recent seasons with an OPS+ well over 100, Robert Jr. needs a change of scenery more than anyone on the trade market. He has still been productive, stealing 22 bases so far, along with significant upside on the defensive side.
Sanchez has tremendous raw power, and a strong arm that could catch some runners from left field. This season, Sanchez, 27, has been up-and-down at the plate. When he's hot, though, he's one of the best clutch hitters. He's hit safely in six of his last seven games entering Sunday, scoring seven times over this stretch.
Ward is probably the worst defender among these three players, but his plate discipline and barrel percentage is enough to entice a buyer in need of an outfielder. The career Angel is having a monster power season, flicking 20 home runs and 17 doubles already, alongside 31 walks.
So, as San Diego continues their desperate search for a full-time left fielder, do any of these three candidates stand out? Robert Jr.'s potential stardom at the plate and solid range in the outfield seems to be the best option, but Ward's power numbers and Sanchez's consistent play on both sides aren't terrible options, either.
