Padres News: Yoan Moncada To Make Decision Soon

Yoan Moncada, the 19-year-old Cuban phenom that has every major league baseball team drooling, will be announcing which team he will be starting his promising career with any day now. Moncada has completed all his private team workouts and is currently waiting for all final team offers before making his decision, according to Dennis Lin at the UT.

One of those offers he will be looking at will be from the San Diego Padres. GM A.J. Preller and the Pads have been very upfront about their quest to sign Moncada, who is seen by most baseball scouts as a player with franchise-level talent.

According to most reports, the current favorites to land Moncada are the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers; both could easily outbid most teams and pay 100 percent tax upfront to sign Moncada if it comes down to money alone. Not to mention, there has to be a bit of lore about those bigger clubs that probably appeals to young international players.

I really want the Padres to sign Moncada. I think he could be the answer for the Padres at shortstop very quickly. A position the Pads do not have locked down for the future too.

Hearing the rumors that the signing will be between $40-$50 million with a 100 percent tax ($80-$100 million all up front) makes me nervous the Padres will lose out on Moncada, like they did Yasmany Tomas earlier this off-season.

All is not lost though, we just have to be patient and see what Preller can do. He’s notorious for his knowledge for international talent and I’m sure he has been eyeing Moncada since his time with the Rangers. Preller and ownership have already had an amazing off-season. Completing big trades to try to bring some offense to the lineup and signing a big free-agent arm. If they miss out on Moncada, I’m sure it won’t be for lack of effort, but signing Moncada would make a great off-season into a, wait for it, LEGENDARY one. Yeah that was a How I Met Your Mother reference, so what? God, the ending of that show sure did suck, huh?

I know, since I’m not the one actually writing the check it’s easy for me to just tell ownership to shell-out another $100 million dollars, but I really think this is the guy you go all-in on. Preller has remade a roster to compete and try to win this season but signing Moncada would show that the Padres are now working on building a future that will win every season.

What do you guys think, is Moncada worth the potential $100 million price tag? Do we even stand a chance against the other big-market clubs? Stay tuned to Friars On Base, we’ll have all breaking news on Yoan Moncada as it develops.
