The Padres have one less problem to solve this winter. It’s a win they should happily take. Yuki Matsui is staying in San Diego after declining to exercise his opt-out, keeping a serviceable left-hander in the bullpen and sparing the Padres another replacement search. His return is welcome news.
Now we need to be careful about what we expect him to bring back with him. Matsui’s 2026 line included a 1.83 ERA over 64 innings, alongside 5.1 walks per nine innings and a 4.18 FIP. The ERA is beautiful. The walks should keep phones working this offseason.
There’s a lot to appreciate about Matsui. He delivered while recognizing that handing out that many free passes leaves very little room for error. The Padres need better control from him, and they need enough bullpen depth to handle the nights when he cannot find it.
Assuming we’re going to get another sub-2.00 ERA into the offseason plan would be asking a lot.
The Padres need to build around Yuki Matsui with realistic expectations
The gap between Matsui’s ERA and FIP is nothing to sneeze at. FIP focuses on strikeouts, walks, hit batters and home runs, giving us another way to assess a pitcher beyond the runs that scored.
It can’t tell us exactly what Matsui will do next season. It does give us a reason to question how comfortably he can repeat those results with the same command.
We should expect Matsui to contribute. But the Padres need to have a backup plan. A contender needs multiple relievers it trusts with a narrow lead, enough reliable arms to absorb a rough stretch, and the freedom to make pitching decisions based on who is throwing well.
Otherwise, a familiar name becomes a permanent assignment. Suddenly, Matsui has to pitch through his command problems with the game on line. That’s a roster problem the Padres can address now before it could possibly happen.
Having Matsui back gives San Diego a starting point. The front office can pursue complementary help, with throwing strikes high on the list of qualities to target.
For Matsui, the assignment is far more straightforward. He’s got to cut out the walks. There’s plenty to like about getting Matsui back. We have already seen him deliver excellent results and he has earned a place in the plan.
Welcome him back. Get him some help. Make another dominant season a bonus the Padres can enjoy instead of a requirement they have to survive.
