This month, the San Diego Padres are 15-9 (.625) in the standings. Even though the Friars were swept by the Dodgers in August, they have done a tremendous joub keeping with their rival in the NL West standings.
San Diego has a strong team right now; there's no doubting that. While mainstays Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. have been playing well, much of the Padres' recent success is thanks to their newest additions. Whether it was Ramon Laureano belting a walk-off, or Ryan O'Hearn coming up clutch despite not getting everyday reps, this new-look Padres team has some wagger, and these players know it.
On Tuesday night against a good Seattle Mariners team, the Padres came out swinging in a dramatic 7-6 win. They muscled five runs in the first inning against ace Luis Castillo, setting the tone that this lineup means business.

Laureano smashed a grand slam in the opening frame, and now has a .914 OPS this year. Other new additions in the lineup contributed, too. O'Hearn (.837 OPS) reached base three times and scored a run, while Freddy Fermin (.261 AVG) picked up an RBI from the ninth spot in the order.
This lineup is dangerous, and these new players have turned this Padres playoff push into a party.
“There’s no question about it, this is the deepest lineup I’ve ever been in,” Laureano said.
Padres' 2025 trade pieces have exceeded expectations
It's not just the new hitters who came up big on Tuesday night, either. Mason Miller, one of the top relievers in baseball, has been borderline unhittable since joining San Diego. He's racked up 18 strikeouts in 10 innings, allowing two runs while logging five holds and one save.
Against Seattle, he tossed a scoreless seventh inning, which was arguably the most clutch inning for the Padres. With a one-run lead, Miller struck out 50 home run man Cal Raleigh on a 101.7 MPH fastball to take the momentum out of T-Mobile Park.

These new Padres have played extremely well four weeks after the trade deadline. President of Baseball Operations AJ Preller is surely happy, considering he traded away a ton of prospects for these players. San Diego is in win-now mode, and while that was a concern about a month ago, this team's tirade has fans believing that the current roster has what it takes to make a World Series run. Those prospects will soon just be a faded memory, especially if the Friars can scrounge up a ring in 2025 thanks in part to the new additions.
