The San Diego Padres have had their fair share of dramatic finishes this season, but their latest extra-inning victory came with an unexpected bonus of comedy gold.
On August 9 at Petco Park, the Padres edged out the Boston Red Sox in a 5-4 thriller, walking it off in the 10th inning. Newly acquired outfielder Ramon Laureano played the role of the hero with a single into left-center that scored Xander Bogaerts from second. It marked the seventh walk-off hit of Laureano’s career and, and more importantly, his first as a Padre.

The moment was big, but the postgame interview may have been even better. Laureano, known for his intense style of play and cannon arm, delivered his story in such a deadpan, matter-of-fact way that fans couldn’t help but laugh. When asked what was going through his mind before stepping into the batter’s box, Laureano admitted:
“I was thinking about hitting a homer, then I thought they were going to give me the bunt sign, and I don’t know the signs, and then it’s like, let’s just chop it down.”

It was the kind of off-the-cuff honesty that instantly became a clubhouse soundbite. No clichés, no polished athlete-speak, just a peek inside the wonderfully chaotic thought process of a player trying to win a ballgame.
Since joining San Diego, Laureano has been quietly productive while still adjusting to his new surroundings. Through 10 games in August, he’s slashing .263/.317/.474 with one home run and eight RBIs. He’s brought energy, a bit of unpredictability, and, as this interview proved, some unintentional humor to a Padres team that’s starting to find its late-summer groove.
For Padres fans, the win was sweet. For those who caught the postgame interview, it was downright hilarious. Laureano didn’t just deliver a walk-off hit, he delivered one of the funniest player soundbites of the season.
