The Padres are currently just a game back of the Dodgers for first place in the National League West. When you're locked in such a tight divisional race, every game matters. And sometimes, that means tough decisions must be made when it comes to roster contruction. Here are three Padres whose time on the roster might be cut short sooner rather than later.
1. Brandon Lockridge
How much longer will the Brandon Lockridge experiment last? That's a question Padres fans are surely asking. The outfielder has now made 19 starts and played in 32 games, splitting time between left field and center field. He's sporting a .194 AVG, .254 OBP and .258 SLG. That is hardly worth keeping around.
While Lockridge is known for his speed and defensive metrics, those have been barely keeping him afloat. His bWAR sits at 0.0, and his seven steals are hardly enough to justify his spot on the roster.
2. Tyler Wade
Wade now has a -1.0 bWAR with the Padres in his two years with the club (-0.7 in 2024, -0.3 in 2025). The utility man has clearly won the Padres' hearts with his ability to play so many positions, but his bat has been nonexistent.
While he has a solid .337 OBP, Wade's lack of power is making it hard to justify keeping him around. He has just two extra base hits on the season, a double and a triple, which has lowered his OPS+ to 76.
It gets worse when you look at his recent splits. Wade hit .172 in the month of May, with a .250 OBP and a .172 SLG.
3. Jose Iglesias
After his resurgence with the Mets in 2024, Jose Iglesias was an exciting name for the Padres in free agency, someone who the team thought they could rely upon for solid defense and a high OBP.
Instead, they got a veteran who has looked way over his head. Iglesias is hitting a solid .248, but his OBP has sunk to .301 and his slugging sits at .292. He currently is valued at -0.2 bWAR, meaning he has been below replacement level to the team.
