The San Diego Padres wanted Jarren Duran. Fans of the Padres wanted the Red Sox outfielder, too, and the front office appears to have done everything possible to try and acquire him - even after getting rejected initially. But it wasn't enough.
Duran was the perfect fit - and the perfect target - for the Friars ahead of the 2025 deadline, and unfortunately, San Diego came up empty on getting Duran, who wound up staying put in Boston.
Padres fans cannot complain too much, though, as AJ Preller and the rest of the front office staff added a bevy of players via trade this season, patching up several problem areas.
Padres fans got everything they wished for at the trade deadline... except Jarren Duran
The Southern California native had been dangling as a premier trade candidate all season, and the thought of him roaming the outfield grass with Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. felt all-too-good, but also somewhat realistic.
Duran would have taken the vacancy in left field at Petco Park, but this only became a reality in Padres fans' dreams. Steven Kwan was another solid and desirable choice, but San Diego wound up getting two Orioles players who could play that position well (Ramon Laureano, Ryan O'Hearn).
Are either of those guys Jarren Duran, though? O'Hearn is an All-Star this season, but is more prominent at first base. Laureano has been an under-the-radar player, and he is expected to contribute, but many fans wonder if he can maintain his 142 OPS+.
While Padres fans need to move on from Duran, the Red Sox faithful can remain happy. Boston is in the middle of a playoff push, all with Duran at the helm. With 53 extra-base hits, including a league-best 12 triples, all eyes will be on him to pull the Red Sox into the postseason.
He was quick to keep Red Sox fans excited, too. After the deadline, he belted a double on Friday, and darted to make a web gem in center field.

Maybe some time down the line, the Padres will acquire Duran. Until then, Friars fans will find a way to be satisfied with Laureano in left field. He has the tools to produce for a winning ball club, so it shouldn't be too hard for fans to stay excited in San Diego.
