It is a lot more work than you think to be a manager at the major league level, and that is evident as Mike Shildt has some very difficult decisions to make. Just after punching their ticket to the postseason, the Padres will have to thin their roster down from 28 to 26 in order to meet MLB’s requirements.
During last year’s playoff run, Shildt prioritized pitching over position players; we only imagine that he’d follow that same model again this year. There are three candidates that we could see not suiting up for the playoffs.
Predicting 2 Padres roster cuts before 2025 postseason
Mason McCoy (INF)
The 30-year-old infielder is definitely the biggest outlier on the roster, as he was only called up in wake of the injury to Xander Bogaerts. McCoy made 16 appearances, four of which being starts. But in reality, most of those appearances were as defensive replacements. With Bogaerts officially back from injury, there isn’t much of a spot for McCoy.
Will Wagner (INF)
Traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Padres at the deadline, Wagner was acquired to serve as a solid bench piece. Someone to pinch run when the team needed speed on the bases, or to provide defense in a close game. While he was never known for offense, his numbers have been truly awful. Over 13 games, he slashed .083/.154/.083 with a -28 wRC+.
Bradgley Rodriguez (RHP)
Rodriguez has five career appearances to his name, and he has solid numbers to compliment his high velocity. In the small sample size of playing time, he has posted an ERA of 1.69 with a 0.94 WHIP. What is really impressive about this is that he is doing all of this at only 21-years-old. While Shildt prioritizing pitching depth could keep him on the roster, the lack of experience is why it would be wise for Shildt to rely on a guy with more playing time under the belt.
