Will Smith's latest quote proves Padres have Dodgers scrambling for answers
What's that, Will? Sorry we couldn't hear you over all the losses.
Well, Will Smith is at it again, folks. That's right, the Los Angeles Dodgers catcher who referred to Jurickson Profar as "irrelevant" can't resist sticking his foot in his mouth when the cameras are on or a microphone is in his face.
MLB.com beat reporter Juan Toribio caught up Smith after the San Diego Padres' 8-1 beatdown of the Dodgers on Wednesday at Petco Park and asked LA's backstop about his team's recent struggles. Smith had a somewhat optimistic and rather entitled view of his team's performance of late.
"We’ll come out of it. No doubt about it. We’re the Dodgers. We’re the best team in baseball," Smith said. It's okay, Pads fans, you can laugh.

The Padres have obviously broken the Dodgers' brains. Outscoring an opponent by eight runs in two games and owning a 7-3 record on the season will do that to a team. The Padres have beaten the Dodgers from pillar to post this season, and Smith's comments are proof that the Friars have LA running scared.
Now, with the MLB trade deadline behind them, the two NL West rivals are set roster-wise for the final two months of the 2024 season. The Padres beefed up the bullpen and added Martin Pérez as insurance. The Dodgers nabbed Detroit Tigers' starting pitcher Jack Flaherty in addition to some other relatively minor moves.
The Dodgers spent over $1 billion this past offseason and the Padres have matched them stride for stride of late. The Padres' two-game sweep of the Dodgers has pulled San Diego to within 4.5 games of Los Angeles in the division. The Arizona Diamondbacks are lurking as well, and are just a half-game back of the Friars.
Smith should really learn to keep his mouth shut. He hit just .208 last month and the Dodgers are 5-5 in their last 10 games while the Padres have won nine of their last 10. Smith was 2-for-9 during the two game set but was irrelevant on Wednesday night after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The Dodgers are reeling and the Padres are getting hot at the right time, so, yeah, you better "come out of it," Will!
