The San Diego Padres are on a roll right now. Thanks to some late-game heroics, the Padres are coming off a sweep of the Pirates and look like one of the most dangerous teams in baseball. The rotation is handling business, the offense keeps coming up clutch, and the bullpen seems to be rejuvenated after multiple trade deadline additions.
The crazy thing is that the Padres are not even at full strength right now. While we still don't know when Fernando Tatis Jr. will return from the IL, there has been some promising news on the injury front as well as a mild bit of concern for one of San Diego's top players coming out of the Pittsburgh series.
Padres News: Jackson Wolf DFA'd as San Diego continues to shape final spots in the bullpen
Whenever a team has what amounted to a bullpen game thanks to a lengthy rain delay followed by an extra-inning game, they are going to have to make a roster move or two to bring up some fresher bullpen arms. As good as the Padres' bullpen has been, it had also been taxed, and adding some reinforcements was clearly the right move.
The move that San Diego landed on was to call up Carl Edwards Jr. since he was stretched out already in the event that the Padres needed multiple innings. Unfortunately, that meant that Alek Jacob got sent down to the minors and Jackson Wolf was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Given that Wolf sports a 7.21 ERA in 23 appearances at Triple-A this season, it feels pretty likely that he will clear waivers and stay in the organization regardless.
Padres News: Jurickson Profar is banged up after Pirates series
For all of the concerns about Profar's knee that were expressed earlier in the season, he has shown little sign of slowing down. He has remained one of the Padres' best and most clutch hitters all season long and remains an absolute bargain for the team as we get into the month of August.
However, the way things went in the series against the Pirates did create a bit of a concern about Profar's health at least in the near-term. After getting hit in the knee by a pitch in the second game, Profar was forced to exit the game early after initially trying to stay in. He was back in the lineup for the final game of the series, but he was then hit another two times in that game. It might not be the worst idea in the world to give the man a day off to heal up a bit.
Padres News: Joe Musgrove to return this weekend against the Marlins
One of the biggest question marks for the Padres lately has been when the team could expect Joe Musgrove to return from his elbow troubles. After making significant progress during his rehab, the initial thinking was that Musgrove would only need one more rehab start before he would rejoin the rotation.
However, manager Mike Shildt revealed that the Padres may be a bit more aggressive than that. Barring something unforeseen, Musgrove could actually return to the mound for San Diego this weekend. As of this moment, the Padres haven't announced their starter for Saturday or Sunday, but everything is trending for Musgrove to start one of those two games, which is great news for a rotation that has been playing extremely well in his absence.
