The San Diego Padres were on such a roll. Heading into their series against the Rockies, the Padres were one of the hottest teams in baseball and looked like they were going to give the Dodgers trouble in the NL West, especially with the return of Joe Musgrove to the rotation. It was a wonderful time.
While the big picture hasn't changed that much as San Diego is still really good and should feature prominently in the playoffs, the news coming out of the weekend surrounding the team is decidedly less rosy than it was before.
Padres News: Don Orsillo taking leave of absence to attend mother's funeral
Padres fans have been able to take real pride in the fact that their broadcast booth is top tier, and a big reason why is that Don Orsillo is one of the best play-by-play broadcasters in all of baseball. Why the Red Sox chose to fire him is beyond understanding.
Unfortunately, fans are going to be without Orsillo for a bit as he mourns the loss of his mother.
The outpouring of love and support that Orsillo has received from Padres fans has been incredible and heartwarming. It's unclear how long Orsillo will be away from the team and who will replace him in the booth. Our thoughts are with him and his family during what must be an incredibly difficult time.
Padres News: Ha-Seong Kim injures shoulder, to get MRI
Ha-Seong Kim's 2024 season has been rather enigmatic. While he has been his usually excellent self on defense after getting moved back to shortstop this year, his offensive limitations have been on full display and he has also been banged up recently. While the triceps injury that gave him trouble didn't seem to amount to much, the shoulder injury that Kim suffered Sunday could prove to be far more troublesome.
Kim was injured diving back to first base where he jammed his shoulder and he was pulled from the game immediately after waving to the dugout. Kim is undergoing a MRI and while the results of that scan will determine the next steps, manager Mike Shildt's comments were pretty telling when he shared that, ""He's dealing with something that's going to require some time. How much, we'll know Monday."
Padres News: Colorado continues to inexplicably give San Diego problems in series loss
Baseball is a funny game because a team can look like world-beaters against the best of the best, but sometimes a bad team can give them fits. That is very much the case when it comes to the Padres and the Rockies because, while Colorado is an objectively bad team that is run terribly, they have been a thorn in the Padres' side all season long.
After losing two out of three in Colorado over the weekend, the Padres finished 5-8 against the Rockies this season. Playing in Denver is definitely a unique wild card situation for any team where weird stuff happens often. One even wonders if the high altitude environment there is the reason why Matt Waldron's knuckleball was decidedly less effective over the weekend. Fortunately, San Diego is done for the year with the Rockies and have some series coming up that are more favorable ... even though the Rockies should've been just that.
