UPDATE, 4:16 PST:: According to the Pirates, this game will begin at 4:50 PM PST.
I told you we never should've come to the east coast, San Diego Padres fans. Nothing good ever happens when you welcome weather variables into the mix.
While the Padres will miss ace starter Paul Skenes in their upcoming series at PNC Park, they've been dealt perhaps a more difficult-to-vanquish foe on Friday night, as rain has delayed the first pitch of the series.
Jackson Merrill won't get a chance to seek revenge against those who stole his Rookie of the Year trophy last season - and, from the looks of it, neither will any of his Padres teammates, for the time being.
Initially scheduled for a 6:40 EST first pitch, the Pirates made plainly obvious what most waiting fans should've already assumed, delaying the game officially about one minute after it was supposed to begin.
Tonight’s game will begin in a delay.

Padres vs. Pirates Rain Delay, May 2: Weather Updates and Details as First Pitch Waits
Pittsburgh is unfortunately under a severe thunderstorm watch, at the moment, and PM thunderstorms are in play tomorrow as well. As weather-watchers know, those could always move.
This game was intended to feature Padres star Dylan Cease opposing extended Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller. The lineup was fronted by a scorching Fernando Tatis Jr., who enters play on May 2 tied for second in fWAR across all of Major League Baseball (2.1). In a bit of pregame housekeeping, outfielder Tirso Ornelas also went back to the minors, making room for the return of speedster Brandon Lockridge (who will come off the bench in this one, whenever it begins).
The Pirates might lack for frontline offensive star power, but their rotation is still not to be trifled with, and presents a significant challenge for our west coast sluggers - especially in the clouds and muck. More information to come when we have it - and hopefully we have it soon. It would be a real shame to have to seek mutual off days between these faraway clubs.
