Padres’ projected 2026 draft pick exposes an obvious farm system trend

The Padres’ farm system cycle is already showing up in 2026 mock drafts.

The San Diego Padres being connected to another high-upside high school left-hander shouldn’t surprise anyone. ESPN’s latest 2026 MLB mock draft has the Padres taking Bishop Feehan High School lefty Brody Bumila with the No. 21 pick.

It’s a pretty easy sell. Bumila is a 6-foot-9 lefty. He’s reportedly touched triple digits. Essentially Kruz Schoolcraft 2.0 from the mound. And their last two first round picks have been lefty pitchers. It all makes sense.

There’s a version of this where Padres fans can be excited about the possibility. The farm system always needs more impact arms. And if there’s one thing the organization hasn’t been afraid of, it’s betting on loud traits before the rest of the picture is fully clean.

The Padres keep drafting arms who feel like prospects and trade currency at the same time

But with the Padres, these draft projections always come with a second conversation attached. Because San Diego uses its drafts for future possibilities. It’s all about upside and leverage.

That is why Bumila, even as a mock draft name months before the actual 2026 MLB Draft, fits into a pattern we all know very well. They love the arm that could turn into a monster if the player development side hits.  And they aim for prospects who instantly become fascinating to every other front office in baseball.

Most teams can draft a player like Bumila and let fans dream about what he might look like at Petco Park four or five years later. With the Padres, the timeline is messy. Fans know better not to dream on a future prospect actually making it to the major league rotation. It’s more likely that they are immediately picturing his name buried in a trade rumor for a major league bat.

That’s the ecosystem the Padres have built. So when the Padres draft a player like this, fans almost have to process two futures at once.

There’s the hopeful future, where Bumila signs, develops, adds polish, stays healthy and becomes the kind of left-handed starter San Diego has been trying to grow for years.

We can dress it up however we want. That is the game. It’s also why this projected pick is more interesting than a normal mock draft blurb. Bumila’s profile screams Padres because it sits right at the intersection of everything this organization likes. Size, velocity, left-handedness, projection and risk. It’s not safe. And it’s certainly not boring.

It’s a real bet. And Preller seems to love a good bet.
