The 2025 MLB Draft kicks off on Sunday, July 13th, and the San Diego Padres are once again on the hunt for their next wave of homegrown stars. After a year filled with ups and downs, the front office is looking to bolster the farm system with a fresh crop of young talent that could one day help the major league roster.
If you’re curious how this year’s class stacks up to last year’s selections, check out P.J. Potter’s refresher: “A look at the Padres’ 2024 draft picks: What are they up to now?” It’s a great way to gauge progress from a developmental standpoint and set expectations for what the organization might prioritize in this year's cycle.
The Padres enter the draft with the 25th overall pick in the first round, but they’ll be without a second-round selection due to the qualifying offer attached to right-hander Nick Pivetta, whom they signed away from the Boston Red Sox this past offseason. Despite that, the club still holds valuable picks to work with.

While this year’s draft class isn’t being hyped as particularly deep, the Padres will still have plenty of chances to find and mold valuable assets. With a reputation for being aggressive on player development and not being afraid to trade, especially with high-upside prep arms and toolsy position players, San Diego will be looking to make the most of their selections — even from the back end of each round.
The draft begins Sunday, July 13 at 3 p.m. PST and will be televised on MLB Network, MLB.com, and ESPN. Rounds 1 through 3 will take place on Day 1, with rounds 4 through 20 continuing on Monday, July 14 starting at 8:30 a.m. PST on MLB.com.
