We are beginning to get an idea of what the Padres' opening day lineup will look like, and to be quite honest, it will be a year of experimenting for A.J. Preller and new manager Craig Stammen, who will have the opportunity to get his feet wet as the new skipper.

You tend to see the most change at the bottom of the lineup, but in the Padres' case, there is way more shifting around at the top of the order. An area you’d think would be the most stable may fluctuate a ton to start the year.

The bottom of the lineup looks the same as last year, with left-fielder Ramón Laureano, second-baseman Jake Cronenworth, designated-hitter Miguel Andujar, and catcher Freddy Fermin batting sixth through ninth.

Despite signing around three first basemen to minor league contracts, the Padres seem to be rolling with Gavin Sheets at the three. He is projected to be batting fifth.

Xander Bogaerts batting leadoff reveals a surprising Padres lineup twist

The top four is where it gets incredibly dicey, as there is no more Luis Arráez in brown and yellow, and it seems obvious that his not being there anymore is playing a role in how the lineup is constructed. Specifically at the lead-off spot.

San Diego is forecasted to run out Xander Bogaerts as the lead-off hitter, and he will be followed by Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado. This is a massive switch-up from last year, as Bogaerts was batting fifth, with Merrill just ahead of him, batting fourth.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is slated in the cleanup hole, and it is very telling why they chose to do that. The hope is that Tatis finds his power surge, and if that is the case, it will make the Padres' offense much more potent.

2026 will be a lot of experimenting for Craig Stammen, who looks to grab the job of manager by the leash and run with it.

It will be interesting to see what the product on the field looks like.
