The San Diego Padres were in the middle of recording their sixth-straight losing season in 2016, but Wil Myers gave the organization some hope. Even if it was just a little.
Ten years ago, Myers represented the Padres at the All-Star Game and in the Home Run Derby, hosted by San Diego. He muscled the most homers in Padres derby history with 10, and a Friar has not performed nearly as well in the competition since.
Beryond Myers' efforts in the Midsummer Classic, let's take a step back to remember one of the stronger offensive seasons by a Padre during the dark ages that were the 2010s.
Wil Myers was a lone offensive bright spot for the Padres in 2016
Myers, in his age-25 season, led the team with a 3.4 bWAR. Only Drew Pomeranz (3.3) had a bWAR north of 3.0 that season.
The Padres' every day first baseman, Myers deposited 28 home runs and clipped a .797 OPS. He went for career-best numbers in several categories:
- RBI: 94
- Total bases: 276
- Doubles: 29 (also reached this mark in 2017)
- Triples: 4
- Stolen bases: 28
- OPS+: 115 (highest in a full season)
- Runs: 99
- Hits: 155
His longest hitting streak lasted 12 games, spanning April 15-27. He batted 19-for-52 (.365) with three home runs, three doubles, and nine RBIs.
On June 7, he won the game for the Padres on a walk-off single down the left-field line. That was part of another Myers tirade, when he hit 12-for-23 with five home runs and 10 RBIs over a six-game hit streak.
Myers was a great Padre. In eight seasons, he produced 134 home runs, which eighth-most all-time in San Diego. He totaled 156 homers for his career, and although he wasn't a mega star, Myers had a respectable career during a forgettable time for the San Diego organization. Ten years later, after a marvelous campaign, he deserves the recognition again.
