Was Wednesday's outing for Padres starter Dylan Cease too good to be true? The star right-hander was mowing through the New York Yankees' lineup in the Bronx, appearing untouchable.
Cease carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in the final game of a wild series, and it was obviously becoming his best start of the 2025 season. With one swing of the bat, though, Cody Bellinger tied the game up with a solo home run, ending Cease's shutout and no-hit bid. But that wasn't the main concern for Padres fans.

After allowing the home run, Cease dialed back in and struck out Anthony Volpe swinging, his ninth of the contest, but that would be the end of the line for him on Wednesday. Cease suddenly exited the game, along with a trainer, and just like that, the Padres' exciting night turned dark.
Two batters after he allowed his first hit, Cease is exiting the game alongside a team trainer. Unclear why. It looked like he was lobbying to stay in the game.

Jason Adam, who boasts an ERA under 1.00 this season, replaced Cease on the mound and struck out Jasson Dominguez to end the seventh inning, still tied.
San Diego is already littered with pitching injuries. Joe Musgrove is out for the season, and Yu Darvish and Matt Waldron still haven't pitched yet in 2025. If Cease goes down, this will be a fateful shot to the club's starting rotation.
On the brighter side of things, the Padres finally saw Jackson Merrill return to the lineup during this series in New York. His solo home run off Max Fried was the only run in the game leading up to Bellinger's round-tripper, so all signs point to the star outfielder being healthy. He also slashed the go-ahead RBI in the top-half of the eighth inning to score Fernando Tatis Jr. Xander Bogaerts followed that up with a sacrifice fly to score Manny Machado, giving San Diego a 3-1 lead before former Padre Trent Grisham crushed a game-tying two-run home run in the eighth.
Unfortunately for San Diego, it does not seem like they can field a fully healthy team all at once. It's great to see Merrill back and immediately contributing, but all in the same game, Cease leaves with an injury.
**UPDATE** Dylan Cease exited with right forearm cramp
According to manager Mike Shildt, Dylan Cease did not want to come out of the game. The Padres are calling it a right forearm cramp, and to be cautious, they pulled Cease from Wednesday's game.
Mike Shildt added later that it was Cease's right forearm where he felt the cramp. https://t.co/B7iZlKLwHB

It's still not a comfortable initial diagnosis for Padres fans, but they can sleep knowing that the injury is not anything major.
