Going into the season, there was plenty of concern surrounding the Padres pitching staff, with multiple starters either hurt or having departed in free agency.
With Nick Pivetta and Michael King serving as the boost up front as guys one and two, the back half had a ton of questions behind it. One of the biggest ones was when Joe Musgrove would pitch, as well as how the four and five spots would fare as well.
The Padres made the signings of Walker Buehler and German Marquez to fill those holes, but with no guarantee that either would be efficient in 2026.

However, San Diego saw their luck take a positive turn on Monday night when Marquez put up a very solid performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Marquez tossed five scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
The outing came after many questions surrounding the back half, coupled with lackluster play.
“The Padres desperately needed an outing like this one from the back end of their starting rotation. It’s perhaps the biggest question mark on the current roster -- and the first few outings at the back end did little to answer those questions.” — AJ Cassavell
Outings like the one Marquez had can really turn a season around for a team that saw a ton of change over the offseason. From losing their star pitcher in Dylan Cease, along with solid bats in Luis Arraez and Ryan O’Hearn, it was always going to be a season where lesser-known players were going to make a difference.
This is an excellent jumpstart for Craig Stammen’s team, as they quickly crawl out of the hole they found themselves in just a week ago, after dropping the first two series of the season at Petco Park.
It will be interesting to see how Marquez does moving forward.
