How active will San Diego be?

The San Diego Padres have been weirdly quiet so far this offseason. We already knew that the Padres don't have a ton of money to spend and frankly, they don't have to do much all that much as the roster is in pretty good shape. Adding a starter would be a good idea with Joe Musgrove out, and a reunion with Jurickson Profar remains on the radar, but there has been very little actual traction towards any move so far.

For some, this period of silence could just be A.J. Preller operating in the shadows before the Padres President of Baseball Operations does what he always does. This front office has a demonstrated propensity for defying expectations and getting big deals done. Even with some guardrails in place, most believe the Padres will get something interesting done this offseason.

However, according to Padres beat writer Kevin Acee, fans should not expect the Padres to do much at the Winter Meetings.

Padres insider thinks this could be a quiet Winter Meetings for San Diego

If the Padres decide to wait until after the Winter Meetings to execute the moves they want to make, it is going to be because this market is objectively nuts at the moment. Juan Soto just signed the biggest deal in baseball history, the price for starting pitching is the highest we have ever seen, and there are now a bunch of deep-pocketed, big market teams who missed on now-Mets superstar who are looking to salvage their offseason. That's going to create a pretty brutal market for a while and especially during the transaction derby that is the Winter Meetings.

That said, Padres fans shouldn't be too upset just yet and one can look to last offseason as proof. Most thought that San Diego was going to go through a "reset" period after losing Soto, Blake Snell, Josh Hader, Michael Wacha, and others. Instead, Preller bided his time and landed Dylan Cease and Luis Arráez in trades while putting together one of the best rosters in baseball in 2024.

Will fans still be up in arms if the Padres stay quiet during the Winter Meetings while top talent get signed elsewhere? Of course they will. Sports fans overreacting in real time is par for the course. However, Preller and Co. have earned the benefit of the doubt and the odds remain good that San Diego will be in a great spot going into the 2025 season.
