2025 has proven to be the year that the Padres seriously contended for a World Series, that is a fact, as they went all in at the trade deadline. The question at hand now is, if this team falls short again, what’s next?

A.J. Preller has three marquee players set to hit free agency this winter, and with money being allocated to the pockets of Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and Manny Machado, he is going to have some difficult decisions to make.

Padres 2025 all-in approach produces uneven returns

The trio at hand is Luis Arráez, Ryan O’Hearn, and Dylan Cease, all three of whom are set to make more than $10 million annually in their next contracts. But it is unlikely all will remain with San Diego— if any to be completely honest.

The Padres have $46.2 million available to spend over the offseason. Remaining below this amount would keep them below the luxury tax threshold. Going over would result in a 20% tax from MLB, for being a first-time offender. The tax will increase each year if the threshold is violated again.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are notorious for going over the threshold, but they have the financial stability to pay the hefty taxes to the league. While it wouldn’t surprise me if they went over the $241 million line, it would be wise to re-sign only the players who provide the most value.

When talking about value, I believe Ryan O’Hearn should be the top priority for the front office to bring back. A reliable designated hitter who can also play first base when needed and provides solid defense. He has struggled at the plate in his time with the Padres, but he should return to his old form next season. It just takes time to adjust to a new place.

While these decisions will be tough for Preller and his crew to make, it should go without saying that O’Hearn is the most valuable player on the ballclub and needs to be extended immediately.
