San Diego Padres fans genuinely love Jackson Merrill. He's electric on the field. He is equipped with several tools that can make him a perennial superstar. He is the future of the franchise.
So, it's especially painful to see a negative body language from him, particularly following a win. But who could blame him? The Padres started the season with a 29-18 record, but have gone 16-28 since. It's been a rough road for the team and for Merrill himself. Injuries are starting to pile up, all while Merrill hasn't been superb at the plate in 2026, registering a 74 OPS+ through 88 games.
Following San Diego's 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks on July 7, Merrill met with the media in front of his locker. Merrill said all the right things, but fans were thrown off by the inflection in his voice.
"I promise that we're doing all we can here," said Merrill in a monotone voice. Merrill essentially recognizes that the team is struggling, and he makes a point to address it. But he had a hard time showing emotion as he spoke through his message. Was he just tired following the game? Or was this a peek into the players growing frustrated?
Jackson Merrill's postgame message to Padres fans revealed more than just blanket words
There was plenty of excitement swirling Merrill going into the 2026 season. Past injuries seemed to be behind him. He signed a nine-year, $135 million extension last year. But then he came out of the gate cold in 2026, hitting .200 to start May.
Things haven't gotten all that better for him, all while the Padres' record started pit-falling. Entering July 8, Merrill is batting .218, which is his highest mark since May 12. So, it's one thing to be on a team that is losing too many games. But it's another thing to be a star who is consistently struggling. That mix can weigh poorly on a player.
Merrill had an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's win, but that was clealry not enough to get Merrill back in good graces. In a way, that's something we should applaud. He knows he has more work to do. But, it is still upsetting to see someone like him be sullen mid-interview. That spoke volumes to fans.
