We haven't even hit the All-Star break yet, but the Padres' 2026 season is spiraling. An eight-game losing streak mercifully came to an end on July 5, but that hasn't completely stopped the bleeding.
The Friars are hurt. Bad. Eight pitchers are on the injured list, causing the team to reluctantly change the roles of some players. One saving grace was hoping that Jason Adam wasn't too hurt, but the veteran right-hander gave the public a better idea of how dire his latest injury is.
Speaking in the Padres' clubhouse this past weekend, Adam indicated that his stint on the 15-day IL will most likely be longer than a couple of weeks. His shoulder strain may require over a month of rehab and recovery.
Spoken from the source himself, Padres' Jason Adam may not return for a while following shoulder strain
After dealing with a quad injury that kept him off the field for the final month of the 2025 regular season, plus the first few weeks of this year, Padres fans breathed a sigh of relief when Adam was back in the bullpen. Not only is he a reliable option, but his veteran presence has been key for the young Padres relievers.
So where do the Padres go from here without Adam for the foreseeable future? If San Diego keeps sliding, it might not make sense to rush Adam back to the mound, especially if everyone else is still hurt.
Other Padres pitchers on the injured list:
- Jeremiah Estrada (right knee)
- Lucas Giolito (right elbow)
- David Morgan (left knee)
- Joe Musgrove (Tommy John)
- Nick Pivetta (right elbow)
- Randy Vásquez (right ankle)
- Matt Waldron (right brachialis)
It might be too early to call this a lost season for the Padres, but Adam telling us that he will miss significant time doesn't make the situation better. There aren't many other arms to turn to, so AJ Preller would have to make a trade to bolster the rotation and the bullpen. But, the front office is going to have to think deeply on whether or not making any trade is even worth it in 2026.
