On Friday night, the sirens started going off inside the minds of San Diego Padres fans. Blinking red lights popped in and out of sight as the Friars were on the brink of being tied in the NL West standings with the Colorado Rockies.
We're only two weeks into the new season, but being on pace with Colorado is not acceptable within the clubhouse, regardless of what month it is. But, all tied at 2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Padres' lineup showed they had the composure to come through in front of 42,000-plus fans. On the night the Padres unveiled their latest City Connect jerseys, their early-season hero from last year came back to life.
With two runners aboard and one out, Gavin Sheets connected for a walk-off three-run home run, his second round-tripper of the night in the 5-2 win. Hidden within the lineup of several star hitters, Sheets was the one who came through for San Diego on Friday to keep the team ahead of Colorado in the standings.
After a slow start to the 2026 campaign, Sheets dialed it back to last year when he displayed flashes of greatness. We can get comfortable with having this guy prevail in the early months.
Gavin Sheets is the hero for the Padres once again early in the regular season
Last year, in his debut with San Diego, Sheets mashed a pinch-hit, game-tying home run on Opening Day. He batted 7-for-his-first-14, making President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller look like a genius for signing him to a minor league deal.
The start to 2026 has not been the same for Sheets, who was 0-for-his-first-10, as well as 6-for-his-first-29 (.207) with no homers. He's turned it around over his last seven contests, but Friday night's bash fest rerouted him back within the fans' circle of trust in clutch moments.

His first home run, a solo shot cranked 416 feet, broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning. He managed to hit the walk-off even further, going 434 feet deep into the San Diego night.
It's refreshing to see this version of Gavin Sheets back. He picked the perfect night to break out.
