He may have just played one season with the San Diego Padres, but Freddy Galvis will always be remembered in high regard by the Friar faithful.

Galvis, 35, has not played in Major League Baseball since 2021, but was still competing professionally up until this week. The slick shortstop announced his retirement from baseball following a 10-year MLB career.

Galvis joins Matt Carpenter as the second former Padre to retire this season. Both fan favorites spent one season in San Diego.

Following a six-year campaign to begin his MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies, Galvis signed with the Padres in 2018. He played all 162 games in 2018, logging a 1.7 bWAR, marking the third-highest of his career.

Galvis batted .248 with San Diego, alongside 31 doubles, 13 home runs, five triples, and 67 RBIs. He also walked 45 times, which tied for a career-high. Some Padres highlights include a five-hit game on June 15 against the Atlanta Braves, and clubbing his first career grand slam.

For his career, Galvis notched 966 hits (.246 average) with 436 runs, 109 home runs, 241 walks, and 171 doubles. His last game was on October 3, 2021 with his original team. He batted 1-for-4 with the Phillies in his last game, including a solo home run in the top of the second inning.

Galvis spent his career with the Phillies (2012-17, 2021), Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds, and Baltimore Orioles - accruing a 9.3 bWAR.

Since Galvis left San Diego following the 2018 season, the Padres have fielded three starting shortstops. Fernando Tatis Jr. held it down for a few years before moving to the outfield. Ha-Seong Kim and Xander Bogaerts have alternated seasons as the primary shortstop, and with Kim gone, Bogaerts has played 80 games at the position so far in 2025.
