The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies combined to make new MLB history Sunday in another offense-heavy game to finish their series.

There was yet another San Diego Padres rally on Sunday, and this one went down in the MLB history books.

The Padres scored four runs in the ninth inning to edge the Colorado Rockies out 14-13. It was the third consecutive game where at least one team scored a minimum of 12 runs.

The combined total score in the entire series—92 runs scored by both teams—was a new MLB record for the most runs over a four-game span.

And the Rockies’ Charlie Blackmon set another benchmark, as the 15 hits he accumulated were the most any MLB player has ever had in a single series.

With statistics like that, it’s no surprise that pitching was once again a concern—on both sides, but San Diego continued to have issues with giving up runs early.

Another “bullpen day” saw starter Nick Margevicius last just over an inning and surrender nine runs on 11 hits. He gave up one home run and one wild pitch.

It was a shame, too, as the Padres got on the board early, scoring in each of the first three innings, so if San Diego’s pitching had been solid, this could have been a blowout for them. Instead, they once again had to rely on a last-minute offensive surge to split the series.

Hunter Renfroe continued to make his case for All-Star selection, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three additional RBI (though he did commit the Padres’ lone error as well).

Greg Garcia was 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs and two runs scored, while Fernando Tatis Jr. continued to deliver in the leadoff spot, finishing the day 3-for-6 with three runs. His OPS on Sunday was an impressive 1.018.

The San Diego Padres finished their road trip at 2-4, and are now two games under .500 with a June record of 5-10. They return home Monday to start a three-game homestand at PETCO Park against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Padres had additional good news on Sunday: they were the only NL West team to win, so they were able to slightly improve in the standings. They are now 13.5 games back in the division, and 2.5 games behind Colorado and the Arizona Diamondbacks for second place. Can they get back to .500 this week and build on their momentum from these recent rallies?
