San Diego Padres AM Talk: Another big trade shakes up the National League and we have Padres minor league All-Stars.

Good Thursday morning, San Diego Padres fans. We are one day closer to the 2018 MLB winter meetings in Las Vegas, meaning one day closer to, hopefully, many big moves across the league. Even though the meetings don’t begin until Monday morning, that hasn’t stopped a few teams from shaking up the landscape and jumping on franchise-changing deals.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a move that sent first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, the face of the franchise, to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for RHP Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, INF Andy Young, and a draft pick. The moved raised a few eyebrows and drew sharp criticism and praise from both fanbases. At the end of the day, Goldschmidt wasn’t coming back to Arizona after 2019 and the Diamondbacks get a few pieces to begin their rebuild.

As far as the Padres are concerned, this means a young San Diego staff will avoid one of the top hitters in baseball multiple times a year and signals the beginning of a rebuild in Arizona. Does this trade also move St. Louis out of contention for Bryce Harper and Manny Machado? Possibly.

In other news, if you were hoping the San Diego Padres would add Nathan Eovaldi to their rotation, it might be time to start looking at a different target. Per The Athletic’s Robert Murray, Eovaldi and the Red Sox are close to reuniting, with other teams now seemingly out of the picture. The big separating factor between Boston and other teams appears to be the fourth year in a potential deal and as Dennis Lin pointed out, the Padres aren’t eager to offer up four years to the flamethrower.

San Diego Padres Minor League All-Stars announced.

On Wednesday morning, MiLB.com released their Padres Organizational All-Star team, comprised of the top performers from across the farm system, ignoring prospect status.
