Who will represent the San Diego Padres at the all star game in Miami this July? Fans better get busy voting for their team’s players.

Major League Baseball’s Midsummer Classic is quickly approaching. The All Star game is set to take place in Miami on July 11th, determining whether or not the American League or National League will host four out of the seven possible World Series contests.

Despite the fact that the Padres will not be too interested in the game for this purpose, its ramifications remain significant. The All Star game is always an honor to participate in, and it means everything even if it means nothing statistically or as far as a team’s record is concerned.

Unfortunately, the Friars are far behind in All Star voting, to the extent that at this point, winning a starting role is an impossibility. No Padres are in the top five of any position in the field.

It is exciting in these final hours before voting ends that some position races in the National League are too close to call. But of course, none of these races involve Padres players.

Since voting is far from climactic for San Diego fans, the question becomes, who will represent the club in South Florida as a reserve?

When it comes to position players, Wil Myers has the best shot. No other player who has been able to remain healthy has hit over .250 or played exceptional defense. This is not a recipe for a trip to Miami.

More from Friars on Base

Even Myers himself has faced struggles in the first half of the season. His .262 average is about where he has normally been in his career, but only driving in 39 so far is off pace for the 26-year-old. Myers is still growing and getting better, as he is only entering his prime. But the first half of the season does not guarantee him a spot in the midsummer classic, even if he is clearly the leader of the team.

Without a position player that stands out, the Padres pitching staff is their best bet to find their logo on the field on July 11th. Clayton Richard has been their strongest and most consistent starter throughout, likely earning him an inning in the middle of the game if nothing else.

Even though the Padres won’t win the fan vote, we encourage fans to vote for their favorite players while they still have the opportunity to do so. Voting ends Thursday night at 8:59 PM PT. Fans can vote up to five times a day until they have reached 35 total votes. Vote Padres!
