After news broke last night that the San Diego Padres had called up catching prospect, Austin Hedges, we were all pretty sure that this would be the next move. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Padres have designated backup catcher, Wil Nieves, for assignment; according to our friend Dennis Lin at the San Diego Union Tribune.

Nieves won the backup catcher position behind Derek Norris this spring after Tim Federowicz was injured and lost for most of the season.
Nieves did not get much playing time with the Padres this season, appearing in only six games and getting 13 at bats. In his few appearances he hit a pretty poor .077/.143/.308.
The highlight of Nieves time with the Padres was an exceptionally beautiful grand slam off Jake Peavy last month, which game the Padres the win over the San Francisco Giants, 6-4.
While I was never particularly impressed with what I saw from Nieves this season, I certianly don’t wish him any ill-will. It comes with the job sometimes. The leading catcher is off to a hot start and the rising prospect and potential future of this team is ready to take the next step, there just isn’t room for you any more.
What do you guys think about this move by the Padres? Agree or disagree?
