Padres Rumors: Talks Heating Up With James Shields?

Don’t order your James Shields Padres jersey quite yet. Last night it was quiet, but today it appears it may heat up. We’ve all been through this all off-season with rumors. We know that situations can and will be fluid.

According to Dennis Lin of UT-San Diego last night, the Padres and Shields had not talked in over a day and no deal is imminent, however, this situation may be changing

As rumors continue to engulf the Padres and free-agent right-hander James Shields, the two sides, as of late Friday, did not seem close to reaching an agreement. The Padres had not spoken with Shields’ agent, Page Odle, in more than 24 hours, sources told the U-T.Within that time frame, many in the industry had begun to identify the Padres as the favorites to sign Shields. But while numbers have been discussed, nothing appears imminent in terms of a deal. A FOXSports.com report had said Shields could make a decision by the end of the week. One rumor said Padres employees had been notified to prepare for a Shields announcement, but a club source strongly denied that claim. Still, with catchers and pitchers reporting in less than two weeks, things could change quickly.

Pitchers and catchers report in less than two weeks, and Shields is the only big guy left. We all know why. People question his age and the fact that he’s been so durable and are waiting for the shoe to drop and become not as durable anymore. Just ask the Yankees with CC Sabathia.

In the report, from Lin, the Padres are still after Phillies’ ace Cole Hamels, though the Phillies haven’t gotten a package to their liking and it appears Hamels will be going to Spring Training as a member of the Phillies.

According to Scott Miller of Bleacher Report, however, talks between Shields and the Padres are heating up.

Will Shields sign this weekend? Stay tuned.
