The re-shaping of the Padres has begun. Remember, it’s not always the big moves that help the most. It’s the small ones. This is a small one, but could end up one that helps. According to Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal, the Padres have signed shortstop Clint Barmes to a one year deal with a club option for 2016.

The 35 year-old Barmes only played in 48 games last year for the Pirates hitting .245/.328/.294 with seven RBI. IN 2013, he played in 108 games hitting .211/.249/.309 with five homers and 23 RBI.
No he’s not a big bat, but his value is on the defensive side. He’s had a positive defensive WAR every year since 2007. Even in Everth Cabrera‘s best offensive season two years ago, defensively he was just a 0.1 WAR
Barmes can either play at second or short and give the Padres a veteran option at either position. He can be a serviceable veteran catch and throw player and can help the Padres young infielders like Jedd Gyorko.
