Padres Rumors: Team Has Inquired On Yoenis Cespedes

It looks like A.J. Preller reads us. Earlier this off-season, I suggested Yoenis Cespedes as a target for the Padres to try and acquire to help upgrade the offense. Well, it looks like they are going with that. According to MLB.com’s Corey Brock,Preller is believed to have called on trying to get Cespedes.

More from Padres Rumors

What could they trade for Cespedes? How bout Ian Kennedy, who like Cespedes, in is in the last year of his contract. From the same article Brock writes:

If there were mutual interest, pitcher Ian Kennedy might be someone the Padres could move in a deal to Boston. The trade would give the Red Sox an innings-eater for the middle of the rotation and, in turn, the Padres would gain what would easily be the most dangerous bat in their lineup.

Also from that post, the Padres do not have the high bid in for Yasmany Tomas, which would lead me to believe a trade for a bat or two will be more likely than reeling in one of the big fish in the free agent market.

It’s hard for the Padres to get the big free agents because of the market and the ballpark. Cespedes has played in a big park before and can hit the ball out of any park. He’d certainly be a good piece.
