The Padres have interest in Pablo Sandoval, expanding the field of known interested team in the star third baseman to five. The incumbent Giants, where he has won three World Series rings, and the deep-pocketed Red Sox are seen as favorites, but San Diego makes sense, too. The Padres are in need of offense, and their third basemen posted a 28th best .613 OPS. They have been more prominently associated with Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, who can play the outfield or possibly third base.
The Padres could certainly use the offense, and adding Pablo Sandoval into the fold would be huge. If they can get Sandoval into the middle of the lineup it could help bring other players over in the free agent market to help as well.
Would the Padres break the bank on Sandoval? That remains to be seen. However, the fact that they are in on him is something of importance, because it shows that they are ready, willing and able to try and play with the big boys.
