Ben Badler of Baseball America reported yesterday that the Padres had another private workout with Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas. According to the report, that’s the third time in three weeks the Padres brain trust has seen the outfielder workout. New GM A.J, Preller said the team would scout more internationally.
Preller had the reputation for his eye for international talent, being a part of getting Yu Darvish and Leonys Martin to the Texas Rangers.
Now he needs to close the Tomas deal for the Padres.
The Padres outfield wasn’t exactly super productive last season. Carlos Quentin continues to be injury-prone. Cameron Maybin got suspended and injured. Will Venable didn’t match his numbers from 2013.
Seth Smith was the player that emerged, but how much can he really be counted on moving forward, even with his contract extension. Rymer Liriano may not be ready to take on a full time role quite yet.

The Padres had one of the worst offenses in years. Something clearly needs to be done to upgrade the bats. You’re not going to lure Victor Martinez or Pablo Sandoval to Petco, so you have to develop your own talent. You’re not going to outspend the Dodgers for a player, so when a player comes around that you think you can grab, you have to strike.
The Padres are not that far off from being a contender in 2015. They need bats. Tomas can be one of those bats.
Now it’s up to Preller to make a big splash as his first move. Close the deal and put Tomas in Petco next year.
