Andrew Cashner Rumored As Target for Rangers

In 2010 and 2011 the Texas Rangers represented the American League in the World Series. Last year, they finished dead last in the AL West. Worse than even the Houston Astros. General Manager Jon Daniels was not happy about it.

Now, with his assistant GM steering the Padres ship, a trade between the two could be imminent. We reported here at FOB yesterday about the trade ideas, but why don’t we dig a little deeper into the Andrew Cashner rumors as reported by Evan Grant.

It makes a lot of sense.

More from Padres News

Pitching was the end of the Rangers season last year, not to mention losing Prince Fielder early on to injury.

Derek Holland and Matt Harrison are back from injury now, Yu Darvish is ready to make a Cy Young push, could they also add Texas born and TCU grad Andrew Cashner from the Padres?

The Rangers would have to gamble as well and hope they get scooped like they did before in trades with the Padres where they gave up Chris Young the Giant and Adrian Gonzalez.  BUT they could give up Elvis Andrus and hope Jurickson Profar is ready to man the shortstop position. After all Rougned Odor played pretty well in his rookie year at second base. They should have bounceback years from Shin-Soo Choo in center, Prince Fielder at first, and they do still have the ageless Adrian Beltre at third base. They also might explore Yasmani Grandal with Cashner as it is unclear if Robinson Chirinos is ready to be as productive a hitting catcher as they need him to be. Of course, the same could be said for Yasmany.

Can the Padres afford to give up Cashner for a shortstop though, even one as good as Andrus? One big question to watch is if Preller only gives up one of his aces for major league talent or goes for the minor league prospect route – a direction that Padres fans are tired of after still not being sure what we ever got back for Adrian Gonzalez or Jake Peavy. Thanks for your time Clayton Richard.

The meetings are heating up, and Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner await to see if they will be part of the rebuilding with the Padres at Petco Park, or just pieces of getting the rebuilding done.
