Padres Morning Dump (Selfish Gwynn and Heath Bell Talk)

Jun 28, 2011 – This started when I was researching Jack McKeon’s “Trader Jack” nickname. A little Googling led me to this article, about McKeon being fired as Padres general manager in September 1990. But tucked within was something I didn’t expect, something I’d never heard, and something way more interesting:

Heath Bell has been the official relief pitcher of frustrated St. Louis Cardinals fans all year, but it’s only recently that the whispering types have begun suggesting they might actually make a trade with the San Diego Padres for their closer. As a result, it’s only recently that I’ve been forced to make my claim as to just how terrible an idea this is. The Cardinals are the last team in the world that can afford to trade for Heath Bell, and I say that in spite of my belief that most teams can’t afford to.

Richard won for the first time in 12 home starts since August and the Padres beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Tuesday night for their third straight series win.
