Padres Morning Dump

The Padres just completed their longest homestand of the season.  They’ve also completed half of their total home games.  As you know the Padres have been notoriously bad in Petco Park, so on their return they had to prove that they could win there.  Before the 11 game homestand started it seemed that the consensus was that they needed to go 7-4 if they had any chance of getting back into the race.  They ended up going 5-6. The results weren’t as bad as past homestands but not as good as they would have liked.

On his parents dining room table Thursday the 22-year-old catcher inked a deal to play in the minor league system of the San Diego Padres, then hopped a plane to Arizona for minicamp before his final destination of Eugene, OR for the short-A season Emeralds. Not bad for a kid who grew up rooting for Mike Piazza and has an affinity for Jose Reyes.

Needing a spot starter on Monday, June 13th, the Padres turned to rookie right-hander Anthony Bass. He allowed one run in five innings in his major league debut, fanning one but showing some command issues with four walks. He was sent back to the minors after his start, but we should see him again later this year and in 2012.
