The Morning Friar – 4/20/11

In the second part of our Padres uniform retrospective, we move on to the 1980s (in case you missed it, here’s the 1970s). Ahh, the ’80s … Tony Gwynn appears on the scene, the team signs Dodger icon Steve Garvey and in 1984 the team reaches its first World Series. The uniforms? More brown.

Thatcher, on the disabled list since March 22 with a strained left shoulder, appeared to be closing in on taking a Minor League rehabilitation stint, but then he reported some soreness in his shoulder during a bullpen session at PETCO Park.

Hunter rewarded their efforts by scoring the first run of his big-league career. He scored from second on a single in the 11th of the San Diego Padres’ 5-3 victory over the Cardinals.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo has mashed the ball through the team’s first week of action, and will continue to be an offensive threat for as long as the Padres leave him on the Triple-A squad. If the to prospect continues to hit at this rate, he won’t be in Tucson for very much longer.
