Well, there’s no denying the Padres were certainly busy during the off-season, but it seems a strange pattern of behavior for a team which had a shot at a playoff spot until the very last afternoon of the season in 2010. The trade of easily their best player in Adrian Gonzalez, may have made sense given his imminent free-agency, but it creates a massive hole in their line-up. Can they fill it?

Orlando Hudson hit a home run and Eric Patterson strengthened his bid to win a bench job with two hits for the Padres (6-7-1), who were facing the Giants (12-4) for the first time since the last game of the 2010 regular season.

Rizzo is second on the team with eight hits and is hitting .444 with three doubles and four RBIs. Rizzo was one of four players obtained in the December deal with the Red Sox that saw the Padres send Adrian Gonzalez to Boston.
