The Morning Friar - 3/8/11

Given the criteria, I’d be more inclined to think either team would be more interested in Rodriguez than any of the other three. He’s only under contract for 2011, and his influence on younger players, even short-term, can be considerable. The Nationals would likely want less in return, and if indeed Jesus Flores is 100%, a Ramos-Flores catching tandem would make sense this year, with Norris getting an everyday gig in the higher minor leagues. Pudge spent 93 games with Houston in 2009, and would likely get many more plate appearances there this season in his quest to reach the 3,000 hit plateau.

Heath Bell said he was nervous. It didn’t show in his performance.

Bell struck out a pair of hitters in a scoreless inning and the San Diego Padres rallied for a 7-6 win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

“They were strong last season with their pitching and defense, but this year they could be better defensively with those moves,” says San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy, whose team knocked the Padres out of the playoffs in that final regular-season game.

I wasn’t so sure about Bengie, and I’m equally not so sure about Pudge. It turns out the Padres inquired about Bengie, but he wants “a guaranteed deal at a respectable salary.” He wanted $3 mllion from the Cards. Pudge’s salary this year is also $3 million, and I have to believe the Pads won’t pay that much.

The Padres are now talking up Hundley. He was going to get 95 starts, but now it’s likely to be more. They may think they can get by with Johnson, but it looks like there’s an audition for minor league insurance, with Quiroz, Phillips and Hagerty getting into yesterday’s game. Both Jed and the Astros can wait to see who gets cut at the end of spring training, but the Astros have a greater need.

we will all be watching what happens when rosters get trimmed down to see what names are available.

i have a feeling that we will start out the season with rob johnson running the backup role and if hundley ends up with any type of injury, then we go after another catcher
