We can see it now. The San Diego Padres, who have been a below-.500 ball club this past month, will get pinched in the All-Star selection process. Yes, of course Fernando Tatis Jr. will get in -- as he should. He is one of the faces of the game, but there is another Padre who is almost definitely going to get snubbed at the ballots.
Gavin Sheets is a career role player, and to many, he is unknown. He came over from the dreadful White Sox this past season, and his efforts in his first stint San Diego have almost been brushed under the rug. Sheets has performed well this year, but the Padres continue to find ways to lose games when he is teeing off at the plate. Friars fans are already preparing for the pain that will come when we find out that Gavin Sheets is undeservingly left off the 2025 All-Star team.
Padres' Gavin Sheets deserves to be an All-Star, but he will be painfully left out
Just yesterday, Sheets flexed a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh inning against the Miami Marlins. His swagger, his power, mixed with the crowd reaction, hinted at what kind of potential All-Star that Sheets can be. But once again, the Padres squandered the game, and Sheets' home run was erased in a 10-8 loss.
Sheets has been the best offseason position player signing in Major League Baseball this season, and it isn't close. Signed almost quietly to a minor league deal, Sheets is on a grossly cheap $1.6 million deal this season -- and he is right in the mix with other All-Stars' production.
His 11 home runs are tied with New York Mets' slugger Pete Alonso. His .833 OPS is higher than Elly De La Cruz, Bryce Harper, and Trea Turner -- just to name a few.
Sheets has been on a tear, cranking five home runs in his last seven contests. Sadly, San Diego is only 2-2 in games he has gone deep over this stretch. It might be easy to overlook what Gavin Sheets has done this season, but if you look closer, he has been one of the best hitters. He sits in 95th percentile in LA Sweet-Spot percentage, 94th percentile in Hard-Hit percentage, and 89th percentile in Average Exit Velocity.
It won't be a surprise if Sheets is snubbed from the 2025 All-Star Game, but he absolutely deserves the consideration that other stars are receiving.
