Fernando Tatis Jr. is built for the moment. A superstar with near hero-like powers on the diamond, Padres fans have seen the 27-year-old come through time and time again in the biggest situations. Having a flair for the dramatic is putting it lightly when it comes to Tatis Jr.
He could very well be the game's best player, and very few would argue with that, especially if he pieces together another MVP-esque campaign.

Fernando Tatis Jr. has entered the chat in a BIG way! #WorldBaseballClassic pic.twitter.com/IEFTEFPwW8
On March 26, the San Diego Padres welcome in the 2026 season as Tatis Jr. enters his prime year. Though things didn't pan out the way the Friars would've liked in 2025, there's now a clean slate. Anything could happen. Led by Tatis Jr., the Padres have the talent to win 95-plus games in the regular season. They have the talent to make a run in the postseason.
But it all starts with Opening Day. San Diego begins the season at home in a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers. Two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal will oppose the Friars on Opening Day, marking a perfect opportunity for Tatis Jr. to ignite an immediate charge to the Padres' 2026 season. We can already envision something big happening.
Fernando Tatis Jr.'s matchup against Tigers' Tarik Skubal should have Padres fans on the edge of their seats
Listen, we don't want to jinx anything, but can you imagine Tatis Jr. taking Skubal deep in his first at-bat, or in a big spot in the middle innings to put the Padres ahead of the Tigers? If Tatis Jr. can connect on a Skubal fastball, we know the roar it would cause at Petco Park.
We know how hard that ball would be hit. It would be the most remarkable way for San Diego to ring in a new season. Having our best player get a hold of one against one of the two best arms in the world would provide enough energy to have Friars fans believing in anything. That's the magic of Opening Day in Major League Baseball.
This isn't hyperbolic, either. Just take a second to think about how you would react to Tatis Jr. hitting a home run against Skubal. Would that not have you feeling a little extra pumped up? If it doesn't, then it might be time to consider following a different sport.
