According to a recent study, the Friar faithful may have to change their name to something like the sobbing syndicate or the crying congregation. Wetten.com recently published an article titled "Which fan bases shed the most tears for their team?" Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the San Diego Padres were at the top.
More than half of sports fans throughout the United States and Canada admitted to crying for their favorite team, per the survey. On the plus side, Pads fans, 69% of those polled claimed that those were tears of joy, rather than sadness.
Study reveals that Padres fans are the most tortured souls in all of MLB
Nonetheless, there's definitely reason to believe that Padres fans have been tortured over the years, and the 2024 season was no exception. After being predicted to outlast the Los Angeles Dodgers during the NLDS and holding a 2-1 lead after Game 3, San Diego managed to bungle away their opportunity and were ousted from the MLB Postseason without a trip to the Fall Classic.
The Friars were not the only Major League Baseball team on the list, but San Diego led the way with 81% of Padres fans admitting to crying over their squad. The St. Louis Cardinals (78%) made the top-10 and so did the Chicago Cubs (71%). Knowing that a billy goat and some guy named Bartman caused your World Series drought to extend over a century, it's fair to cut the Cubbies some slack. But no one should feel sorry for Cardinals fans.
Apparently it's tough being a fan of Inter Miami, which is a soccer team in MLS. Those fans led the way with 88% of their contingent admitting to shedding tears over their soccer club. They're probably crying because of the exorbitant ticket prices being charged to justify Lionel Messi's contract.
There's no shame in crying, Pads fans (no matter what Tom Hanks says). Baseball is an emotional sport sometimes. The hope, of course, is that next October will be filled with tears of joy as San Diego lifts the Commissioner's Trophy for the first time ever. The Padres have been close of late, and sooner or later, the Friars will break through and win their first World Series.
