Leo De Vries and Ethan Salas have each been heralded as top prospects across baseball, not just within the San Diego Padres' organization. This teenage tandem has been given lofty expectations, although they are not expected to reach the major leagues for another two years.
In MLB.com's latest Top 100 prospect shakeup, Friars fans can still find two familiar names toward the top. De Vries, a shortstop, comes in as the No. 3 best prospect in the sport, and Salas (catcher) sits at No. 25.
Unfortunately for Salas, 19, he hasn't played in a game since mid-April due to a back injury. Prior to that injury, Salas was batting 6-for-32 (.188) with five RBIs. Ideally, he returns to San Diego's Double-A affiliate (San Antonio) soon to get back on track.
De Vries has been on a much different path than Salas in 2025. The 18-year-old infielder is blossoming into a legitimate five-tool player, and he has been rewarded by receiving an invite to this season's Futures Game.

With High-A Fort Wayne, De Vries has rallied for 23 extra-base hits in 65 games alongside 37 runs, 35 RBIs, and 42 walks. Entering July 3, De Vries has muscled six multi-hit games across his last 10 contests, which includes a 4-for-9 start to July with three runs scored.
De Vries and Salas are the only two San Diego representatives within the current Top 100, but Kash Mayfield (LHP), Humberto Cruz (RHP), and Boston Bateman (LHP) round out the Padres' Top 5. Mayfield is 20 years old, and is the only non-teenager in the Padres' Top 5.
Mayfield has logged 49 strikeouts with Single-A Lake Elsinore this season across 31 innings with a 3.48 ERA. Cruz
Cruz made eight starts in Rookie Ball before getting promoted to Lake Elsinore this month. In Cruz's Single-A debut, he racked up four strikeouts on July 1 in three scoreless frames.
Bateman has made a dozen starts with Lake Elsinore, boasting 63 punch-outs in 56 innings. Since May 18, he has lowered his ERA from 4.78 to 3.54.
