Robbie Ray’s Padres debut couldn’t come against a more haunting opponent

Houston has spent years making Ray look painfully ordinary.

Padres fans are about to learn at very high speed which version of Robbie Ray they have acquired. The org is throwing him a welcome party by handing him one of the worst opponents imaginable. The Houston Astros.

Ray owns a 3-3 record against them. It’s a .500 record that says way less than you think. The rest of his career line is brutal: a 6.86 ERA, 56 hits, 31 earned runs, 19 walks and 11 home runs allowed across 40 2/3 innings. He has recorded 43 strikeouts in nine appearances, but Houston has consistently made him work for every single positive outcome.

We’re about to find out if those numbers are ancient history, or if the Astros still have the book on Ray. The matchup carries a fun full-circle wrinkle. Though Ray probably wouldn’t call it that.  He made his major-league debut against Houston in May 2014 and delivered 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball for the Detroit Tigers. He earned the victory and walked off the mound to a standing ovation. That remains one of his best performances against the Astros.

Robbie Ray’s ugly career numbers against the Astros should concern Padres fans

Everything after became considerably uglier from there. Houston did its worst damage during Ray’s 2022 season with the Seattle Mariners. Across three starts, the Astros hammered him for 23 hits, 13 earned runs and six home runs in only 10 2/3 innings. That’s a 10.97 ERA for anyone who’s curious.

During the first of those meetings, Ray revived a two-seam fastball in the middle of his start. The pitch helped him survive five innings and eventually became an important part of his arsenal. For a moment, Houston had forced Ray into an adjustment in real-time that appeared capable of changing his season.

Then, the Astros adjusted right back. In their next meeting, they tagged him for a career-high-tying 10 hits and six runs in three innings. José Altuve homered on Ray’s first pitch of the afternoon, Jeremy Peña followed with another blast and the ambush never stopped.

Altuve remains the face of that problem. He has gone 11-for-20 with two home runs and three walks against Ray while striking out only once. And then…there’s Yordan Alvarez.

If you want to talk about a low point, this is it. Ray’s history with Houston reached that point in Game 1 of the 2022 ALDS. Seattle handed him a two-run lead with two outs in the ninth inning and asked him to retire Alvarez. Ray threw a sinker over the plate. Alvarez launched it 438 feet into the right-field seats for a three-run walk-off homer.

Now Ray gets another shot at Houston with a different uniform and a different team counting on him. The Padres are receiving a pitcher who arrived with a 10-6 record and a 3.08 ERA this season. That version looks capable of helping San Diego in October. The Robbie Ray that Houston dismantled four years ago would give the Padres another reason to worry about a rotation that cannot afford many.

Let’s not treat this as a prophecy, though there’s some guilt with calling this out. Ray hasn’t faced Houston since 2022, and plenty has changed since then. His current form matters. His arsenal is different. And he’s pitching in a park less giving to righties.

But the history still matters too. There’s no gentle introduction here. Ray’s Padres career begins with the opponent that has seen his adjustments, punished his mistakes and handed him one of the most painful moments of his career.
