After an off day on Monday, the San Diego Padres open a six-game road trip with a visit to PNC Park to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. (San Diego time).

While it might have been off day for the Padres, there were still plenty of news items to cover, including San Diego's top prospect receiving an expected honor.

San Diego Padres news: Jackson Merrill heading to Futures Game

The top prospect in the Padres organization, Merrill was selected to take part in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Saturday of All-Star Game weekend. The seven-inning contest will take place on Saturday, July 8, at 7 p.m. Eastern/4 p.m. Pacific from T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

Merrill joins an impressive group that will take the field during the Futures Game. Currently slashing .266/.300/.414 at High-A Fort Wayne, the 20-year-old Merrill will be the only Padres prospect participating in the contest.

San Diego Padres prospects moving up

Speaking of Fort Wayne, San Diego's fourth-ranked prospect, left-hander Robby Snelling, is making the jump from Lake Elsinore to the Tin Caps. It's part of a series of moves reported on Monday.

San Diego Padres injury news: Tom Cosgrove pitches in ACL

Currently on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, Cosgrove reportedly threw an inning inside an Arizona Complex League game on Monday night. It was an inning where the 27-year-old southpaw filled up the box score, allowing one hit and one run while walking a batter and striking out two.

It likely isn't the only work outside of the Padres that Cosgrove will need before rejoining the MLB team, so expect some more time before Cosgrove is back with San Diego. The Padres will certainly welcome him back when he's ready after posting a 0.53 ERA/2.97 FIP/0.529 WHIP in 17.0 innings covering 16 games. His ERA+ currently sits at a jaw-dropping 783 after striking out 15 and walking just two while allowing just seven hits in those outings.
